The Sibley School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering offers an accredited undergraduate program in mechanical engineering. This program is designed to provide a broad background in the fundamentals of this discipline as well as to offer an introduction to the many professional and technical areas with which mechanical engineers are concerned. The program is appropriate for a wide range of career objectives, including supervised engineering practice, advanced professional engineering education, and other professorial education such as business, law, or medicine. Two main areas of concentration, corresponding to the two major streams of mechanical engineering discipline, are offered in the field program.

Mechanical systems and materials processing are concerned with the design, analysis, testing, and manufacturing of machinery, vehicles, devices, and systems. Particular areas of emphasis include mechanical stress analysis, control systems, computer-aided design, vehicle engineering, dynamic systems, biomechanics, and materials processing and precision engineering.

Engineering of fluids, energy, and heat-transfer systems is concerned with the experimental and theoretical aspects of fluid flow and heat transfer and the sciences of thermodynamics and combustion. Specific areas of concentration include aerospace engineering; heat energy and power engineering; and thermofluid sciences.

The undergraduate field program is a coordinated sequence of courses beginning in the sophomore year. During the first semester of that year, students who plan to enter the field of mechanical engineering take ENGRD 202 as an engineering distribution course. They also are encouraged to complete ENGRD 221 which is a field requirement that may simultaneously satisfy Common Curriculum requirements as an engineering distribution course.

During the five semesters after affiliation, completion of the Common Curriculum will typically mean earning credit for one math course, one science course, two approved electives, and five humanities or social science courses.

The requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering consist of eleven required courses (beyond ENGRD 202, already mentioned), and five elective courses.

The upper level program includes a large number of electives which (in combination with the two approved electives) may be used to build programs with particular emphasis that feature the interests of individual students. The five field-approved electives must include two courses which form a depth concentration, a field design elective, a mathematics elective, and a technical elective. More detailed information about these electives can be obtained from the undergraduate office in 112 Upson Hall.

An additional graduation requirement is proof of elementary competence in interpreting technical drawings. This requirement can be satisfied by: a) ENGRG 102 - Drawing and Engineering Design; b) a technical drawing course in high school or in a community college; c) a technical drawing course at Cornell; or d) a departmental examination. Specifics can be obtained from the undergraduate office in 112 Upson Hall.

The computer applications requirement of the Common Curriculum may be satisfied by several courses, including M&AE 389 and 670.

Introduction to Electrical Systems (ENGRD 210) may be replaced or supplemented by Physics 360 - Introductory Electronics.

The technical writing requirement of the Common Curriculum is satisfied by the required course M&AE 427 - Fluids/Heat Transfer Laboratory.

A comprehensive set of the required third-year courses is offered each summer under the auspices of the Engineering Cooperative Program.
