Kleinberg receives MacArthur Fellowship

Prof. Jon Kleinberg, CS, was among the 25 recipients of the 2005 MacArthur Fellowship announced September 20 by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. The "genius awards" as they are commonly called, recognize people for their creativity, originality, and potential. The $500,000 each fellow receives over five years is designed to encourage future exploration and ingenuity. The money comes with no strings attached, according to MacArthur Foundation officials, leaving winners free to spend the reward however they see fit.

The MacArthur announcement describes Kleinberg as a "computer scientist revealing the deep structure of complex networks such as genomes or computer networks, and creating new methods to extract the information embedded in them."

College mourns the lost of Emeritus Professor Ray Thorpe

Dear Friends,

As I'm sure you've heard, we lost a very special member of our Engineering community last week. Emeritus Professor Ray Thorpe died peacefully at home on September 6, surrounded by his family. He was 84.

Ray was a member of the faculty in the School of Chemical Engineering (today's School of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering) for 39 years; he was an excellent teacher who won many awards and had a special talent for reaching students. He brought that gift back to the college after retirement when he joined the staff of the Engineering Advising office, where he was a source of support, guidance, and inspiration for a generation of engineering students.

A memorial service for Ray was held September 19 at 1:00 p.m. in Sage Chapel to honor a remarkable individual whose life modeled the standards of integrity and commitment that have come to define the College of Engineering.

Sincerely,

Kent Fuchs
Dean of Engineering
