Administration & Contact Information The Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences (EAS) is the home at Cornell of study of the physical and chemical processes of the earth system, stretching from deep in our planet through the atmosphere. Our research and educational programs also encompass the coupling of those chemical and physical processes to the biosphere because, unlike any other planet in our solar system, Earth's processes and Earth's evolution are tightly linked to the biosphere. Our research includes includes three elements: investigation of the processes themselves; documentation of the history of the solid earth, oceans, and atmosphere; and application of that history to projection of future conditions (forecasting) and provision of natural resources (energy, metals, and water).
We are parts of two colleges, Engineering and Agriculture and Life Sciences. We enroll undergraduate majors from not only those two colleges, but also from Arts and Sciences. Our undergraduate programs have three distinct themes: the history and processes of the solid earth; the science of the atmosphere; and the interwoven processes of the earth system, inclusive of oceans, solid earth, biosphere and atmosphere. EAS graduate students are affiliated with two fields, Geological Sciences and Atmospheric Sciences.
