AFOSR Presentation - July 2009

Dr. Brendan Godfrey, Director of the Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR), visited Cornell on July 6, 2009 and gave an informative talk about how to do business with AFOSR. Dr. Godfrey encouraged Cornell researchers to contact AFOSR program managers with ideas for revolutionary basic research. A single BAA for individual investigators summarizes the AFOSR's research priorities and lists program managers by specialty. Researchers with ideas that interest program managers will be invited to submit white papers for evaluation under a peer or scientific review process. Submissions are accepted year round.

With an annual budget of around $500 million, AFOSR funds basic research programs across more than 200 universities for individual investigators and in multi-university research initiatives (MURIs), with small business contractors who partner with universities and within the Air Force Research Laboratory. AFOSR also dedicates a portion of its budget to support young investigator grants, early career awards, and graduate fellowships as well as other programs.

AFOSR basic research areas are Aerospace, Chemical and Materials Sciences, Mathematics, Information and Life Sciences, and Physics and Electronics. Areas of enhanced interest include Complex Networks, Energy and Thermal Management, Robust Decision Making Agile, Autonomous Flight, and Adversarial Behavior Modeling - Space Situational Awareness.
