In the College of Engineering at Cornell University, great science is not enough. We aspire to make discoveries that change the world. ![]() Kent Fuchs, Dean Our faculty members are leaders who make a difference. We are making people healthier and raising the standard of living across the globe. We are cleaning the environment and discovering new sources of sustainable energy. Our faculty is invested in some of the most pressing issues of our time, such as finding alternatives to oil, predicting tsunamis, securing the Internet, combating terrorism, and curing disease. Solving any of these problems will change the world. Collaboratively, we are working on all of them. Across the college’s 12 departments, we offer strong interdisciplinary programs with Cornell’s world-class physical sciences and life sciences, and we lead partnerships with all of Cornell’s colleges and schools, particularly the colleges of Arts and Sciences, Agriculture and Life Sciences, and Veterinary Medicine, the Johnson Graduate School of Management, the faculty of Computing and Information Science, and the Weill Cornell Medical College. Through these collaborations, we offer an unusual blend of engineering and science that is characterized by non-traditional innovative departments, majors, and graduate programs. Cornell’s unique Graduate Field structure transcends traditional department boundaries, fostering meaningful interaction and supporting a rich interdisciplinary environment for faculty research and graduate education. This booklet describes the college’s six strategic areas of research focus and provides examples of a few of our faculty in each area. These six interdisciplinary areas of inquiry build on our current research excellence and are the focus of significant collaboration across the university.
Interdisciplinary collaboration—research without boundaries—brings great opportunity for creativity, innovation, and rapid breakthrough discoveries. Together, the faculty members of Cornell’s College of Engineering are designing the future. |
