Most commencement questions should be directed to the Cornell University Commencement Office. We encourage you to thoroughly review their Web site.
To get you started, however, we’ve compiled the following commencement tips.
Cornell commencement occurs three times a year: May, August, and January. If you are planning to graduate, you should begin planning well in advance. We recommend that you:
- Check with your academic department or adviser to ensure that you have met all the course requirements for graduation from your major
- Order a cap and gown at least two months before the ceremony
- Contact the Engineering Registrar’s Office to ensure that your name is spelled correctly on your diploma
Graduation is a festive time and a reward for years of hard work. Pay attention to these details, and you’ll be all set to go!
When are degrees and certificates awarded?
Degrees are awarded annually in January, May, and August. Every candidate, regardless of graduation date, is invited to participate in the May Commencement ceremony.
How do I apply for graduation and where?
The College of Engineering does not require that you complete a graduation application. Each academic department maintains its own graduation requirements. To ensure that you have met all graduation requirements, we urge you to check directly with your department or with the Undergraduate Engineering Handbook.
How can I be sure my name will be printed correctly on my diploma?
Your name will be printed exactly as it appears in your official academic records. The Engineering Registrar’s Office will e-mail you several months before graduation to remind you to check your name. It is your responsibility to verify your name in Just the Facts.
How do I change or correct my name?
To change your name before graduating: you must provide documentation of that name to the University Registrar's Office. Accepted documents include a valid government issued passport, current visa, original birth certificate, and original name change order that is typically issued and signed by a state court.
When will my transcript reflect my final grades? (May/August/January)
Your final grades will be added to your official transcript within two weeks of your graduation date.
How can I order official copies of my final transcript?
Cornell University, not the College of Engineering, issues official transcripts. You need to contact the Cornell University Registrar to order official transcripts.
When will final grades be posted?
Final grades are typically posted in Just the Facts the week after graduation. Some departments will release unofficial grades before official posting; please check with your department.
Where do I order my cap and gown?
You can order your cap and gown online from the Cornell University Commencement Office.
How many credits do I need to graduate?
Each engineering major determines the number of credits necessary to graduate. The number of credits required for the Bachelor of Science degree varies from major to major. Please check with your department or with the Undergraduate Engineering Handbook for clarification.
If I receive honors, do I need to add regalia to my graduation gown?
No. The College of Engineering does not offer additional gown regalia for students who have attained honors. Your honors will be noted on your transcript and your diploma.
