What are Academic Excellence Workshops (AEWs)?
Academic Excellence Workshops in the College of Engineering are taken in conjunction with core engineering courses in math, computer science, and chemistry. The optional, one-credit AEWs are weekly two-hour cooperative learning sessions. Designed to enhance student understanding, they feature peer-facilitated group work on problems at or above the level of course instruction. Small-group activities are directed by undergraduate peer educators called facilitators. The AEWs are based on research showing that cooperative methods (as opposed to an individual, competitive approach to learning) promote higher grades, greater persistence, deeper comprehension, more enjoyment in learning, and more positive attitudes toward academic work.
The Academic Excellence Workshop Program is sponsored by:
Academic Excellence Workshops are in place for the following classes:
-
Math 1091, 1092, 1093, 1094
-
CS 1010, CS 1011, CS 1012
-
CHEM 1009
The workshops function as one-credit courses and are graded "S/U" based on attendance. Those who miss more than three workshops will automatically receive a "U" grade.
Also, while no physics AEWs are offered, supplementary courses for Physics 1012 and 1013 are provided through the .
How to Register
You must be registered to attend an AEW workshop. Registration for AEWs runs on the same schedule as registration for classes in general; you may access the online add/drop instructions through Just the Facts. Please note that AEWs are "general interest" courses and have the ENGRG prefix.
