The initial phase of a team’s development involves establishing goals and objectives and conducting research and proposing designs that could feasibly achieve these goals. Concurrently, the team is establishing a new team culture, and many new team members and leaders are learning what to do on-the-fly. As a result, this phase can be a particularly chaotic one. In a year-long project, this phase will take the longest time (approximately 40-50% of a nine-month cycle), but the pace and intensity of work will be less intense than in the following phases.
