A petition is the official way to request action on academic matters that are not routine. Submission of a petition is the student’s opportunity to present convincing evidence that an exception is warranted. Petition forms may be picked up in the Engineering Advising Office (167 Olin Hall). Petition forms are also available online. Once action has been taken on a petition, the form is used to notify the petitioner, the engineering registrar, and the student’s faculty advisor of the outcome. Completed petitions become part of the student’s record held by the Engineering Registrar’s Office.
Petitions are required for such purposes as:
- Amending a program of study by adding courses after the first three weeks of the semester or dropping courses after the first seven weeks
- Amending a College Curriculum graduation requirement, such as substituting a course, or a stated sequence of courses, in a degree requirement area
- Requesting an exception to a College academic policy
Students who have not yet declared their engineering major should submit completed petitions to the Engineering Advising Office (167 Olin Hall). If a student has declared an engineering major, he or she should check with the major department to find out where to submit the petition.
