Sponsor an Industry Collaboration

Corporate sponsorship of a Master of Engineering (M.Eng.) student project is a great way to connect with talented upcoming graduates while gaining new perspectives on a topic of interest. Each year, industry partners host M.Eng. student teams on a variety of project types.  Faculty work with you to frame your project and you work directly with our students to confirm, discover, or develop your proposed challenge.

Collaboration Goals and Outcomes

Our goal is to create educational and real-world learning opportunities for our M.Eng. students. Working with our program leaders and faculty can also create a direct pipeline for companies to recruit students who are professionally trained in their area. As part of the project deliverables, teams are required to provide suggestions for next steps and on-going work associated with the project for your consideration.

We invite you to submit a proposal.

Sponsor Benefits

Companies that sponsor M.Eng. projects have an opportunity to scope out challenges that are relevant to their business, such as exploring the commercialization potential of a new technology or exploring/defining the value proposition of a new business space yet to be developed. Project areas of interest include: data science and artificial intelligence, energy and sustainability, medical and industrial biotechnology.

Sponsor Expectations

Designate a point person or “sponsor” within your organization to serve as the primary contact for the project manager (Cornell faculty member) and student team. The point person enables the student team to fulfill the project objectives by providing information, guidance, and access to key resources in a timely fashion.

Help frame and scope the goals and objectives of the project.

Meet bi-weekly (or as needed) with the team and project manager to discuss upcoming deliverables.

Help obtain key resources, which may include data (where NDAs can be signed at the company’s request), individuals with relevant domain knowledge, or any special software and/or computing environments relevant to the project.

Attend the final presentations (typically May).

If feasible and applicable, plan a site visit for the team.

Allow Cornell to post the final project details on our public-facing websites (with any confidential information removed).

Student Team Responsibilities

Each student project team is assigned a dedicated project manager (Cornell faculty member) to enhance the student learning experience and ensure high-quality project outcomes. Projects are typically assigned mid-Fall term, allowing teams to conduct initial assessments in late Fall and commence full project activities in the Spring term. The primary responsibility of the student team is to fulfill the proposed project outcomes in a timely and professional manner. At the conclusion of the project, the student team will present their project outcomes through an oral presentation and deliver a binder that includes a written report and any supporting documents that were developed as part of the project.
