Akane Wakai, Sibley Ph.D. Student, wins NASA Space Technology Graduate Research Grant
Akane Wakai, a Ph.D. student working in Assistant Professor Atieh Moridi’s group, recently won a NASA Space Technology Graduate Research Grant. She will be working on 3D printing of high entropy alloys. Her research project seeks to combine the advantages of the unique characteristics of high entropy alloys and the additive manufacturing process to push the limits of materials.
This program funded by NASA, seeks to sponsor graduate students who show significant potential to contribute to NASA’s goal of creating innovative new space technologies for the Nation’s science, exploration and economic future.
In addition to the faculty advisor, students will be matched with a technically relevant and community-engaged NASA Subject Matter Expert, who will serve as the student’s research collaborator.
The visiting technologist experience is an important part of a NASA Space Technology Graduate Research Opportunity award, during which the graduate student researchers perform their research at NASA Centers. This experience provides the opportunity to work collaboratively with leading engineers and scientists in their chosen area of research. Students will also be able to take advantage of broader space technology research opportunities directly related to their academic and career objectives, and acquire a more detailed understanding of the potential end applications of their space technology efforts.
