The Cornell ChemE Car team saw continued success at the 2016 Northeast Regional Competition with an unprecedented 4th consecutive 1st place finish. The competition is sponsored by the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) and encourages undergraduates to apply their engineering skills outside the classroom. Students must chemically control a shoebox-sized car to carry a random water weight from the start line to the finish line (at a random distance) and stops. Teams have two attempts and the school that lands closest to the finish line wins.
The Tank, powered by a PEM hydrogen fuel cell, stopped 3cm from the line to secure Big Red the victory and a trip to the 2016 National Competition in San Francisco this Fall. Cornell is the reigning National ChemE Car champion, having won at the 2015 National Conference in Salt Lake City with Drifter, powered by a zinc-alkaline battery. Only the best of the best can compete nationally - qualifying teams must place in the top 3 at a Regional competition to advance. Zinc-erbell, Cornell's zinc-air battery car, also had a strong showing and received an honorable mention for 4th place among 13 teams.
Big Red's dominance was not just limited to the performance competition. The Tank also won the Regional poster competition, which requires teams to visually and verbally present their car's design, cost, and environmental impact. This is Cornell's 2nd consecutive Regional poster win - Cornell also won the prize at the 2015 competition. Cornell ChemE Car hopes to keep the winning streak alive as the team sets its sights on adding a 5th National trophy to the collection.
