Cornell Professor Speaks to Wall Street’s Need to Train and Retain Diverse Technical Talent

On Friday, December 6, Cornell University Professor Marcos Lopez de Prado testified to the U.S. House Committee on Financial Services about the Impact of AI on Capital Markets and Jobs in the Financial Services Industry. His message was clear—retrain existing talent because technical expertise is becoming more important for the financial industry. Current and future generations of financial professionals should be “trained to work alongside algorithms.” Professor Lopez de Prado emphasized that technical education has the potential to be a powerful tool against discrimination and that the financial industry needs to apply itself to retain talent that we work so hard to educate. Cornell Master in Financial Engineering students are lucky to be taught by Professor Lopez de Prado. He shares his knowledge and expertise through his course, Machine Learning Applications in Finance, as well as several projects sponsored by Wall Street companies (all of which take place at Cornell Financial Engineering Manhattan - CFEM). Launched in 2016, ours was the first program to offer a Financial Data Science certificate as part of our Master in Financial Engineering degree—professional degree designed to equip students with the knowledge that makes them more than capable of working alongside the algorithms.
