Cornell Tech Summer Research Experience

The Colleges of Arts and Sciences and Engineering have joined together to connect up to ten undergraduate students on the Ithaca campus with opportunities for summer research experiences at Cornell Tech. Students will work with Cornell Tech faculty and postdocs, or partner organizations/companies associated with the campus, over a 10-week summer program.

Roper Center for Public Opinion Research

The Roper Center for Public Opinion Research is now accepting applications for the 2018 Andrew Kohut Fellowship Program in Public Opinion & Survey Research. This fellowship is open to both graduate and undergraduate Cornell students, so I wanted to ask that you forward this opportunity to your listservs or any parties you think may be interested.

The fellowship provides a $4,000 stipend for the summer, allowing the recipients to engage in their own original public opinion-focused research project using data from the Roper Center archives. More information is available, and interested students may direct any questions to our Associate Director, Brett Powell. Applications are due on Friday, March 9th.

2017 U.S. Army Research Laboratory Summer Journeyman Fellowship Program

The U.S. Army Research Laboratory (ARL) Research Associateship Program (RAP) Summer Journeyman Fellowship Program allows undergraduates, graduates students and recent postgraduates at the bachelor’s and master’s level to engage in research initiatives of their own choice, that are compatible with the interests of the government and will potentially contribute to the general effort of the ARL. Scientists and engineers at ARL help shape and execute the Army's program for meeting the challenge of developing technologies that will support Army forces in meeting future operational needs. It is also the fourth component of the ARL’s Research Associateship Program (RAP).

USAISR - Summer Internships 2018  ({(}>U.S. Citizenship is Required)

The US Army Institute of Surgical Research ({(}>USAISR) is seeking applications for summer internship appointments for undergraduate students from accredited colleges and universities to conduct research at the USAISR.  The internship has a firm start date of Monday, 4 June, and will end on Friday, 10 August 2018.  Applicants will be evaluated once their complete packet is submitted.  The final deadline for application submission is Tuesday, January 2, 2018.  Only U.S. citizens with a minimum GPA of 3.5 are eligible for this program.

The intent of the undergraduate student internship is to provide an opportunity for students interested in science, engineering or medical career fields to participate in research directed at improving the care of injured military service members and society at large.  This mentored research experience will expose interns to ongoing efforts in integrated science, technology and engineering solutions at the nation’s premier military trauma research institute.  Selected candidates will be compensated $2,750.00 per month, based upon full-time participation.

Prerequisites:  All interns must have completed at least their First Year class requirements for a bachelor’s degree with an overall GPA of 3.5 of higher ({(}>out of a maximum of 4.0; if other scale is used, provide qualitative interpretation and/or equivalency to 4.0 scale).  A science or engineering program of study is preferred, and prior research experience will be considered. 

Practical Research Experience Program (PREP)

North American students are invited to apply for the TUM Practical Research Experience Program (PREP), a 10-week program that runs over the course of the summer. PREP participants will build up and further refine their research skills, learn more about the specifics of the German higher education and research landscape, and become members of the diverse scientific community at Germany's top-ranked technical university.

Applicants must meet the following application criteria:

  • Undergraduate or graduate students
    (at least 2 years of undergraduate studies completed when arriving to TUM)
  • GPA minimum: 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale)
  • Project-specific skills as mentioned in project descriptions

No German language proficiency is required to participate in the program. Applicants are expected to be aware of recognition and credit transfer regulations at their home institutions. 

TUM International Center will arrange accommodation for all program participants, and award scholarships to students in need of financial support. An orientation event as well as cultural program will ensure that program participants are well integrated into the local student body, and will have a chance to immerse themselves in the unique cultural and economic environment of Munich and Bavaria, respectively.

Technion International’s Summer Program in Entrepreneurship and Internship- Tuition Free

Technion offers engineering students a tuition free chance to come to Technion for the summer program, May – August (including a research internship). The program consists of a 10-week unpaid academic research internship followed by a 4-week study period. The program also includes social activities and trips. More details are on this website:

Technion is offering to waive the course tuition for Cornell engineering students, and students are responsible for the deposit of $250 USD, $1,500 USD internship fee, airfare, housing, and any incidental expenses. Technion offers scholarships for need-based students.

Cornell students are expected to do on-campus research internships rather than off campus industry internships due to public transportation travel restrictions. Also please note that Cornell does not award degree credit for internships. Any transfer credit for academic course work should be pre-approved using a transfer credit form available here: Registrar Forms for Undergrads and M.Eng.

Research Experience for Undergraduates at UC Irvine

Bioacoustics Research Program at Cornell's Lab of Ornithology

The Bioacoustics Research Program's (BRP) mission is to collect and interpret sounds in nature by developing and applying innovative technologies across multiple ecological scales to inspire and inform conservation of wildlife and habitats.

We conduct a broad range of terrestrial, aquatic, and marine bioacoustic research, often at large geographic scales. Many of our projects are applied, featuring a strong focus on the conservation of endangered species. More recently we have engaged in soundscape ecology research and the development of acoustic metrics to assess biodiversity and ecosystem health. We are also researching new ways to collect and analyze acoustic data sets using autonomous mobile systems and algorithm development.

Summer Research Opportunities in ECE for Freshmen

The Cornell School of Electrical and Computer Engineering announces the Cornell ECE Early Career Research Scholars Program. This program is designed for students between their freshmen and sophomore years in the College of Engineering who intend to major in ECE. Students will apply together with a faculty mentor. Engineering/Field Biology Collaborative Research

A summer internship is available this summer for a qualified student to join the TABER tag team of biologists and engineers who work with very small (<1g) solar-powered tags to track small birds through their annual cycles of movement. We have two projects we will be pursuing--one is the refinement of a digital turnstile system that uses a system of base-station receivers across migratory concentration points to interrogate passing tags on migratory birds for the data they are storing in their on-board memories. The second project will be to refine a direction-finding receiver that uses the phase difference between the radio signals arriving at coupled antennas to estimate the direction of the incoming signal. Both these projects use the Raspberry Pi in conjunction with custom-built receiver dongles, and we are keen to involve students interested in working with embedded systems in projects that have real-world application to the study of wild animals.
