Turbulence

Turbulent flows are ubiquitous in engineering applications and nature. The presence of turbulence typically increases by several orders of magnitude the rates of important processes such as the transport of momentum and heat and the mixing between different chemical species. Current activities in the turbulence area at Cornell include: experimental and simulation studies of water droplet and particle motion in turbulence, relevant to cloud formation and particulate transport; the modeling and simulation of turbulent combustion using large-eddy simulation (LES) and probability density function (PDF) methods; experimental studies of vortex instabilities and dynamics, vortex-induced vibrations; and experimental and simulation studies of multi-body flows with turbulent separated and reattaching flow regions.
