Optoelectronics

New optical materials and devices have the potential to change the way we live. Photonic-bandgap materials, for example, have the ability to route lightwave signals in unique ways that could revolutionize high-bandwidth data communication on and between integrated circuits. Organic light-emitting devices efficiently convert electricity into light, and could dramatically reduce the worldwide energy consumption devoted to lighting. Silica-encapsulated fluorophores developed at Cornell offer a unique functionality for nanobiotechnology and nanophotonics applications.
