Mark Campbell, John A. Mellowes ’60 Professor in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, has been elected a fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA). AIAA defines this distinction as a person in aeronautics or astronautics that has made notable and valuable contributions to the arts, sciences or technology.
“The aerospace community was my original home – it will always hold a special place for me. All of my graduate professors and mentors were AIAA fellows making it clear to me that it is a very high honor. It is really humbling to be part of that group,” said Professor Campbell.
Campbell’s research areas span across sensor fusion and perception; decentralized estimation and control; human decision modeling and human-robotics interaction; nonlinear and hybrid estimation theory; formation flying spacecraft, and structural dynamics and control.
Professor Campbell has had a number of notable achievements during his career. He served as the S.C. Thomas Sze Sibley School Director – contributing to the department in immeasurable ways over his eight years, including managing the construction of the new Upson Hall, leading the renewal of the faculty, and ensuring the high quality of educational programs offered by the Sibley School. Campbell has earned four teaching awards during his time at Cornell for his educational impact on students in the areas of control systems, estimation, and space systems with an emphasis on experiential learning projects.
Campbell is an IEEE Fellow and Kavli Fellow with the National Academy of Sciences and sits on both the Air Force Science and the AIAA JGCD Advisory Boards. He earned his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Carnegie-Mellon University, and both his M.S. in Aeronautics and Astronautics and Ph.D. in Control and Estimation from Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
“I have been privileged to be involved in some amazing aerospace endeavors, from my project in graduate school flying on the space shuttle, to working with students on UAV and satellite projects, to my work with the AIAA and Air Force Science Advisory Board,” said Campbell. “When I think of this award, I think of all of these experiences, and the many students and colleagues associated with them.”
Mark Campbell will be officially inducted at the AIAA Fellows Dinner on May 19th, 2020.
