Students in Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) programs (Air Force, Navy/Marine, and Army) are often required to complete four-year academic plans at the start of their time at Cornell for their respective ROTC branch. These plans require academic advisor approval. Engineering Advising is available to assist students with the review and approval of these plans.
Steps for Completing Your Plan
- Your plan should follow the major flowchart for your intended major
- Utilize the Engineering Undergraduate Handbook of the year you entered Cornell to map your academic plan to the flowchart and to the major degree checklist. The checklist will help you determine course names and numbers, expected credits per specific classes, and total credits for each semester.
- For any electives from the flowchart, please identify them as such on your academic plan instead of choosing exact courses right now (if you do not yet know or have completed exact coursework yet). Example: Technical Elective or Major Approved Elective.
- The handbook states that you can count up to 6 credits of ROTC courses at or above the 3000-level toward Advisor-Approved Electives. Should you decide to use ROTC courses as Advisor-Approved Electives in your plan, please label them as such.
- The same rules apply for Liberal Studies courses – at this point, it is not necessary to do the work of choosing all of these, however, you should have the minimum number of courses (6) and credits (18) represented to meet the Liberal Studies requirement.
- Some ROTC courses (some AIRS, NAVS, MILS) can also count as Liberal Studies. Please refer to Currently Approved Liberal Studies Petitions List to learn which ones are approved. If you plan to use any of the approved ROTC courses as liberal studies, label them as such in your plan.
- To learn about all the other ways to identify all other liberal studies courses, please refer to Liberal Studies Requirements.
- Be sure to include the rest of your ROTC courses and corresponding credits for each semester on your academic plan.
Steps for Submitting Your Plan for Review
Please plan ahead. Advisors will need 1-2 weeks to thoroughly review your academic plan. We cannot guarantee a review of these plans during the busy Add period of each semester.
- You can either schedule an appointment to meet with your cohort academic advisor in Engineering Advising utilizing our bookings link through Chatter or you can email your cohort advisor.
- Please be sure to send your full academic plan, completely filled out, ahead of your meeting or as an attachment to your email. It is understandable that you may have further questions or need assistance with the plan. We will consider it a first draft.
- We will notify you of any edits needed.
- Once the plan is appropriate, we will sign off and either give you a physical copy or email you the signed copy.
