Engage with Materials Science and Engineering Students

Do you want to give back to your materials science and engineering community? There are many ways to stay connected, and your involvement plays a key role in the growth and development of our students.

  • Materials Science and Engineering Senior Lab

Senior Lab is intended to develop and solidify technical and professional skills in the context of an engineering project with meaningful deliverables achievable in 3 months. Teams of 3-4 students collaborate with companies or units across campus to address engineering needs in a project.

Projects can involve some hands-on work, but could also primarily (or exclusively) involve design, computation/simulation, or data analysis components that do not require being in a lab. The project can be executed at the company site or on campus using shared research facilities. The average cost of this partnership is $750.00, depending on the type and frequency of campus resources needed.

Email Christopher (Kit) Umbach with your project idea and discuss options for upcoming semesters!

  • Master of Engineering Industry Partnership

A required component of our Master of Engineering program is a project that can span one or both semesters, with the ideal scenario being the student committing 12-15 hours per week to an industrially focused project while they are completing the rest of their coursework.

This partnership gives employers access to top-tier shared research facilities while investigating in interesting projects that your team may not currently have time or resources to conduct. Our expectations are that the project has a defined deliverable to measure student progress against with regular interactions with the sponsor to build their understanding of professional engagement and project management.

M.Eng. projects are pitched to the incoming cohort during orientation week (August 18th-22nd). The average cost is between $1,000-$5,000, depending on the type and frequency of campus resources needed.

Email Kintu Early with a project idea and to learn more about this partnership.

  • Student Mentorship

Give students insight about what their future career(s) might entail. Share your perspective on the transition from academia to the professional world through personal experiences, career milestones, and networking, to name a few.

We are looking for individuals that are enthusiastic about sharing their experiences with students through one-on-one interactions over the course of a semester or a student’s entire Cornell career.

Email Karla Wagner to share your contact information and some professional interests and we’ll work to curate a group of students whose goals and interests align with yours.
