The Cornell University Board of Trustees has elected Alyssa B. Apsel to be the IBM Professor in Engineering. Endowed chairs are the highest faculty honor at Cornell.
"Alyssa has all the attributes we expect of a Chaired Professor," former ECE director Clifford Pollack wrote in his nomination of Apsel. "She has a distinguished research record in circuits: her impact in radio and wireless technology alone would merit her promotion to Endowed Chair. Her teaching has been effective, serving a broad need within the school for circuits instruction. But most significantly she has consistently displayed a truly unique talent for leadership within the school."
Apsel has served as the director of the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering since 2018. Prior to coming to Cornell in 2002, she received her undergraduate degree from Swarthmore College and her Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University.
Prior to becoming director, Apsel served as the school’s director of graduate studies. She has won numerous research and teaching awards over her career, and authored or co-authored over 100 refereed publications in related fields of RF mixed signal circuit design, ultra-low power radio, photonic integration with VLSI, and circuit design techniques in the presence of variation resulting in five patents and several pending patent applications.
The focus of Apsel’s research is on power-aware mixed signal circuits and design for highly scaled CMOS and modern electronic systems. Her current focus is on low power radio for IoT and reconfigurable multi-standard radio to extend the reach of wireless communications.
