Biography

Current position – Exploring Options for the next phase of my career.

Sylvia is recently retired from her position with NOAA’s National Integrated Drought Information System as a Senior Research Associate working on drought resilience in the northeast US (alongside Cornell’s Northeast Regional Climate Center team). Her work with NOAA NIDIS also focused on the impacts of drought on human health, infrastructure, energy, and emergency management across the nation. Sylvia’s undergraduate degree is in atmospheric sciences from Cornell University (‘81) and her master’s degree is in science policy from North Carolina State University. She now lives in Cincinnati, Ohio with her adult daughter and enjoys cooking, snowshoeing, movies, and short hikes to explore southwest Ohio with her dog, Riker.

Since my early days at Cornell, I have felt a strong calling to focus on applied science and a multidisciplinary approach to addressing weather impacts. In service to the council, the department, and EAS students, it will be my privilege to share experiences from both the public and private sectors of the weather enterprise including service in the U.S. Air Force and as an Emergency Management professional. I also look forward to a continuation of my personal goal to expand opportunities for all science students in service to the public.
