Dear Alumni and Friends,
I hope your fall is going well! While the leaves are turning we are still getting some nice warm weather in Ithaca; I always enjoy fall here.
One theme you’ll find in this newsletter is hearing about both the past and the future of the department. You’ll hear some reflections from the past, where 50 years of COCORP was celebrated at the June INSTOC meeting. The future is well-represented as well, as you’ll read about our undergraduate students organizing the First Annual Cornell Weather Conference. Both events were great successes.
In addition, you’ll hear about the new NISAR satellite, which will provide important new data about how the surface of the earth is moving. There is an obituary of our former colleague Don Turcotte (faculty at Cornell for 43 years), who co-wrote the definitive book on geodynamics, as well as profiles of an undergraduate student, a recent alumni and a new faculty member.
Our students, alums and faculty have received many prestigious awards and promotions this year: please celebrate with us these successes. We had two new faculty members join the department this past year: Chloé Arson and Una Miller. Chloé Arson discusses the M.Eng. program in this issue, and Una Miller talks about her life, her research and what drew her to the field to start with. You can also read about some important work on “zombie” volcanos and cuts in sulfate emissions from ships.
This coming year we will work hard to connect our students better to our alumni. You can help us do this by joining CU-elinks (cuelinks.cornell.edu), which is a simple web interface that allows our alumni and students to be in touch. Students can ask you questions about life after graduation, jobs, career tracks and more. Thanks for your support of the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences community!
Best wishes,
Natalie
