Description

Coupled continuum models spanning amorphous polymers to metastable steels

Vikas Srivastava, Howard M. Reisman ’76, P’09 Assistant Professor of Engineering, Brown University

Abstract

In this talk, I will describe our recent research on coupled continuum scale constitutive models that span amorphous polymers, engineered tissues, and metastable steels. I will discuss our elastic viscoplastic model for glassy to rubbery/viscous fluid-like phase transformation and predictions of polycarbonate response from moderate to extremely high strain rates (10^5/second), mimicking moderate impact to shock wave conditions. I will also briefly discuss our recent continuum homogenized model for highly anisotropic collagen fiber-matrix engineered heart tissues. Next, I will describe our work on metastable steels. At cold temperatures, steels such as 316L stainless steel show coupled temperature and plastic strain driven transformation from FCC austenite to BCC martensite. The mechanical properties of such metastable austenitic steels make them desirable for a wide range of applications ranging from automobiles to liquefied natural gas (LNG) transportation. I will present our thermo-mechanical model for phase transitioning austenitic steels for room to cryogenic temperatures. Finally, our recent research applying machine learning with finite element simulations to accurately measure critical characteristics of embedded non-visible flaws in steel structures will be discussed. Experimental validations of all modeling and computational work will be discussed.
