Awards and Honors

Uli Wiesner, the Spencer T. Olin Professor of Engineering (MSE), has been named the recipient of the Charles G. Overberger International Prize for Excellence in Polymer Research. A half-day symposium will be held in his honor at the fall 2023 American Chemical Society National Meeting.

C. Thomas Avedisian, professor (MAE), was elected a member of the 2023 cohort of Fellows of the Combustion Institute “for pioneering experiments on droplet combustion that have informed detailed numerical modeling of combustion of liquid transportation fuels.”

Michael Clarkson, senior lecturer (CS), received the 2023 Tau Beta Pi Professor of the Year Award given each year by the Cornell Engineering Alumni Association to recognize exemplary teaching and commitment to students.

Rafael Pass, professor (CS, Cornell Tech), has been elected an International Association for Cryptologic Research Fellow for fundamental contributions to theoretical cryptography and service to the cryptography community.

Fengqi You, the Roxanne E. and Michael J. Zak Professor in Energy Systems (CBE / Systems Engineering), had his research, “Cascading Polymer Macro-Debris Upcycling and Microparticle Removal As An Effective Life Cycle Plastic Pollution Mitigation Strategy,” featured on the cover of the April 25 issue of the journal Environmental Science and Technology.

Greeshma Gadikota, assistant professor (CEE), had her startup, Carbon To Stone, awarded first place in the regional competition for the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Technology Transitions EnergyTech University Prize.

The Netherlands Mathematical Congress has awarded the 2023 Brouwer Medal to Éva Tardos, the Jacob Gould Schurman Professor (CS, ORIE), in recognition of her long-lasting contributions to the field of discrete mathematics, in particular in the areas of combinatorial optimization, approximation algorithms and algorithmic game theory. Tardos received her award at the NMC 2023 conference April 11 in Ultrecht, The Netherlands.

David A. Putnam, Cornell Engineering's Associate Dean for Innovation and Entrepreneurship and a professor in the Meinig School of Biomedical Engineering and the Smith School of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, was elected the Samuel B. Eckert Professor in Engineering, effective April 1, 2023.

John B. Greenly was appointed as Senior Research Associate Emeritus of Laboratory of Plasma Studies, effective upon his retirement from Cornell on March 2, 2023.

Darrell G. Schlom, professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, was elected as a Tisch University Professor, effective April 1, 2023.
