Engineering Math Workshops Course Assistant

Applying to Become a Course Assistant

At this time we are not accepting applications for Course Assistant positions. Please email questions to eng-learning@cornell.edu.

We are looking for students with the following:

  • Mastery of course content in Math 1910 or Math 1920--Course Assistants must have at least a 3.0 GPA and a grade of B+ or higher in the course they would like to be a CA for.
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to explain complex topics
  • The ability and desire to foster a collaborative, active learning experience for their fellow Cornell students

Workshop problems will be common across all sections, and have been developed by Engineering and Math faculty.

Each session will be led by the section TA and an undergraduate facilitator (or “Course Assistant (CA)”).  During the workshop sections, the TA and CA provide help and support as the student groups collaboratively work through the workshop problems.

The time commitment as a course assistant will involve one 1.5 hour training meeting at the beginning of the semester, one hour per workshop section facilitating the workshops, and up to one hour per workshop week preparing for the workshop.  Workshops are not held in all weeks, but typically 6-9 times total; and they typically skip prelim weeks and first and last weeks.

For a CA assignment for one section, the estimated total time commitment over the semester is 14-20 hours. You may apply for more than one section, with each additional section adding 6-9 hours to the total time commitment (depending on how many workshops get scheduled over the term).
