Darvin Griffin, M.S. ’14, Ph.D. ’16, a biomedical engineering researcher at Cornell’s Bonassar Research Group, has been named one of the nation’s top young engineers by DiscoverE.
Griffin is one of 12 young engineers, age 30 and younger, recognized by the organization. Each year since 2003, DiscoverE has honored the work of up-and-coming engineers who are making their mark on their industry.
The 29-year-old Griffin is part of a research group at Bonassar that is assessing treatments for cartilage repair in the knee, which is associated with loss of function and long-term complications such as osteoarthritis. Their multidisciplinary approach involves techniques in biomechanics, biomaterials, cell biology, and biochemistry.
Griffin won the 2015 Mike Shinn Distinguished Graduate Student of the Year, presented by the National Society of Black Engineers, as well as a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship (2010-14). He serves as a mentor and role model to minority students in STEM fields, at the middle school and college levels.
